Course Overview
This training provides essential awareness for understanding the risks, responsibilities, and safe working practices associated with the prevention, control, and management of chemical spills in the workplace. The course is designed to help participants understand how chemical spill response forms part of workplace health and safety management under Irish legislation, and how safe handling and response behaviours can help prevent injuries, environmental harm, property damage, and regulatory breaches.
Participants will gain awareness of employer and employee responsibilities, safe chemical handling and storage, spill kit use, hazard identification, emergency response procedures, and the importance of following company procedures when dealing with a chemical spill incident.

What is a Chemical Spill? Understanding what is meant by a chemical spill, including accidental releases of hazardous substances, leaks from containers or storage vessels, spills during transfer or handling, and spills arising from damaged packaging or equipment failure.
Legal and Safety Responsibilities Overview of relevant workplace safety and environmental responsibilities under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and associated regulations, the Chemicals Act 2008, REACH and CLP Regulations, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements, including the need for safe systems of work, competent personnel, suitable storage and containment, and compliance with hazardous substance handling requirements.
Employer and Employee Duties Understanding the responsibilities of employers, managers, supervisors, and employees in managing chemical spill risks, including cooperation, reporting concerns, following company policies, and the provision of appropriate training, equipment, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Chemical Handling and Hazard Awareness Awareness of the importance of understanding chemical properties, reading Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and container labelling under the CLP Regulation, recognising hazard pictograms, safe handling and storage practices, incompatible substances, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Spill Prevention and Control Measures Understanding the importance of secondary containment, spill kits, drainage protection, correct storage of chemicals, segregation of incompatible substances, and routine checks to reduce the likelihood of spills occurring.
Spill Response and Emergency Procedures Awareness of safe spill response actions, including assessing the situation, evacuation where necessary, containment and absorption techniques, safe use of spill kits, ventilation, avoiding contact and inhalation, and knowing when to escalate to specialist or emergency services.
Hazard Awareness in the Workplace Recognising common chemical spill hazards, including flammable, corrosive, toxic, and reactive substances, confined spaces, drainage and watercourse contamination risks, ignition sources, and changing conditions during a spill event.
Incident and Emergency Awareness Understanding the importance of reporting spills, near misses, damaged containers, unsafe storage conditions, and environmental releases, and following company procedures after a chemical spill incident, including notification obligations to the EPA or local authority where applicable.
Communication and Reporting Promoting effective communication between employees, supervisors, managers, environmental and safety officers, and emergency services to ensure spill risks are identified, reported, reviewed, and controlled.
